In short: In 2026/27, 17 public universities in Italy admit students to 21 English-taught courses through the IMAT: Medicine and Surgery almost everywhere, Veterinary Medicine at Bologna and Napoli Federico II, Dentistry at Sapienza and Siena. Together they offer 1269 seats for EU candidates (and non-EU candidates living in Italy) and 543 for non-EU candidates living abroad. Private universities such as Humanitas, UniCamillus, San Raffaele and Campus Bio-Medico use their own test instead.
Every seat number below comes from the ministry's official table (MUR Tabella B, annexed to Decree 1005 of 6 August 2026); every row links to the university's own course or admissions page. For the exam itself (60 questions, 100 minutes, +1.5/−0.4), see the complete IMAT guide.

«EU seats» are for EU citizens and non-EU citizens living in Italy, who share one national ranking. «Non-EU seats» are for non-EU citizens living abroad, ranked locally by each university. A university name links to our Italian page with all its courses.
Courses still being accredited
The ministry's table also lists courses that are «in fase di accreditamento» (accreditation in progress) or whose admission route we could not confirm from the university's call. Check the university directly before counting on them:
- Firenze, Medicine and Surgery: 50 EU seats, no non-EU seats; accreditation in progress.
- Neuromed, Pozzilli, Medicine and Surgery: 230 EU seats, 10 non-EU; accreditation in progress.
- Roma Tor Vergata, Tirana (Albania), Medicine and Surgery: 320 seats, all for non-EU candidates living abroad.
Federico II's Veterinary Medicine and Padova's MedTech course carry the same caveat in the table, but both universities have published a 2026/27 IMAT call for them, so they stay in the list above.
Private universities with their own test
These universities appear in the same ministerial table, but their 2026/27 calls admit students through their own entrance test, on their own dates, not through the IMAT:
| University | City | EU seats | Non-EU seats | Admission |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Humanitas University | Pieve Emanuele (Milan) | 90 + 150 | 40 + 50 | Online test, two sessions a year |
| UniCamillus | Rome | 425 | 225 | Own test, several rounds a year |
| Vita-Salute San Raffaele | Milan | 86 | 64 | Home-based test (February and March for EU candidates) |
| Campus Bio-Medico | Rome | 84 + 68 | 36 + 12 | Written test in English, one session in Rome |
Where two figures are given, the university has two English-taught Medicine courses in the table.
Choosing your universities
You sit the IMAT once and rank your universities in order of preference when you register on Universitaly; for 2026 that window closed on 9 September. The national ranking, published on 26 October 2026, assigns you to the highest preference your score reaches, and you need at least 20/90 to be in it. How it works step by step, with the deadlines after each scroll, is in IMAT 2026 ranking; non-EU candidates living abroad follow their own local rankings.

IMAT universities: frequently asked questions
Which universities accept the IMAT in 2026?
17 public universities, with 21 English-taught courses: Bari, Bologna, Cagliari, Campania Vanvitelli, Catania, Messina, Milano, Milano-Bicocca, Napoli Federico II, Padova, Parma, Pavia, Politecnica delle Marche, Roma Sapienza, Roma Tor Vergata, Siena and Torino. Most offer Medicine and Surgery; Bologna and Federico II also offer Veterinary Medicine, Sapienza and Siena Dentistry.
Do private universities in Italy accept the IMAT?
Humanitas, UniCamillus, Vita-Salute San Raffaele and Campus Bio-Medico have English-taught Medicine seats in the same ministerial table, but their 2026/27 calls fill them with their own admission test, on their own dates. Check Università Cattolica's own call: we could not confirm which test it uses.
How many IMAT seats are there in 2026/27?
At the 17 public universities listed here, 1269 seats for EU candidates and non-EU candidates living in Italy, and 543 for non-EU candidates living abroad. The numbers per course are in the table above, from MUR Tabella B.
Can I apply to more than one university with the IMAT?
Yes. You sit one exam and, at registration on Universitaly, rank the universities in order of preference; the national ranking assigns you to the highest one your score reaches. For 2026 the preferences closed on 9 September.
I am a non-EU citizen living abroad. Is my list different?
Yes. You compete only for the non-EU seats of the university you chose, in a local ranking that university publishes, and any score above zero is enough. The dates are in our guide to the non-EU rankings.
Is the IMAT the same as the semestre filtro?
No. The semestre filtro is the admission route for Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine taught in Italian. Courses taught in English kept a one-day entrance exam: the IMAT.
