How to use an IMAT simulation: timing, guessing and what to revise

Updated on 6 min readBy the UniTest Pro Editorial Team

In breve: you can take a free IMAT simulation right in your browser: 60 original questions in 100 minutes, each mirroring the IMAT 2025 question in the same position, with the real scoring (+1.5 / −0.4 / 0) and no sign-up. This guide is about using it well: pacing, guessing and reading your section scores.

The IMAT is won on two things: Biology, which alone is 23 of the 60 questions, and timing. A full simulation trains both. Reading notes trains neither.

Scoring, and what it means for guessing

+1.5 correct, −0.4 wrong, 0 blank. With five options and nothing eliminated, a blind guess is worth −0.02: a small but real loss. Eliminate a single option and it turns to +0.075; eliminate two and it is +0.23. The break-even sits at a 21% chance of being right. This is the opposite of Italy's semestre filtro, where the penalty is only −0.10.

What you can do for free

  • One full simulation a month, with official timing
  • Ten practice questions a day, by subject and topic
  • The mistake book, filled in automatically
  • Your score per section, so you know what to revise

Managing the 100 minutes

A hundred minutes for sixty questions is 1 minute 40 per question, and Biology alone is 23 of them: lose your rhythm there and you reach Chemistry short of breath. Our simulation splits the time in proportion to each section's questions — it trains the pace rather than reproducing an official per-section clock.

Frequently asked questions

Is the IMAT simulation really free?

You start for free: one full simulation a month and ten practice questions a day, at no cost. Premium removes the limits — unlimited simulations, unlimited practice, full explanations and the AI tutor.

How is the IMAT structured?

60 questions in 100 minutes across five official areas: Reading skills and acquired knowledge 4, Logical reasoning and problems 5, Biology 23, Chemistry 15, and Physics and Mathematics 13 — which our table splits into 7 and 6.

How is the IMAT scored?

+1.5 for a correct answer, −0.4 for a wrong one, 0 for a blank. The penalty is heavy: guessing blindly across five options has a slightly negative expected value.

Should I guess on the IMAT?

Only after eliminating options. A blind guess across five options is worth −0.02 on average; ruling out a single option already turns it to +0.075, and two to +0.23.

Where does the simulation run?

In the UniTest Pro app, on iPhone and Android. The overall duration is the official 100 minutes; the per-section split is ours, built to train your pace.

Are the questions always the same?

No. Every simulation draws from a verified bank built on the official syllabus and format, so repeating a simulation trains you rather than testing your memory of it.

When should I take my first full simulation?

Once you have covered most of the syllabus. A full paper taken too early only measures what you have not studied yet.

Is this the official IMAT paper?

No. These are questions built on the same syllabus and format, verified before publication. No preparation provider has the official paper before exam day.
