The digital SAT in Italy 2026–27: SAT exam, scores and the universities that accept it

Updated on 11 min readBy the UniTest Pro Editorial Team

In short: The digital SAT exam has 98 questions in 2 hours 14 minutes: Reading and Writing (54) and Math (44), each in two timed modules, scored 400–1600. In Italy the SAT test is accepted instead of the university's own test at the Politecnici of Milano and Torino, at Bocconi and Luiss, and on several English-taught courses. The next dates are 5 December 2026, then March, May and June 2027.

This guide is for students in Italy who are deciding whether to sit the SAT, and how to study for the SAT once they have: what the exam contains, how it is scored, how typed-in answers work, when and where to take it, and the minimum SAT score each Italian university asks for.

1. What the SAT is, and who needs it in Italy

The SAT is College Board's admission test, now digital only: taken on College Board's Bluebook app on your own laptop or a loaned device. Italian universities do not require it by default: it is an alternative to their own test (Politecnico di Torino, Politecnico di Milano, Bocconi, Luiss), or the admission test on some English-taught courses at Bologna and Torino. If your target course is in that list, the SAT is worth comparing with the Italian test — the table in section 7 has the rules.

2. Structure of the digital SAT

The digital SAT, section by section (College Board Assessment Framework)
SectionModulesQuestionsTime
Reading and Writing227 per module (54; 50 scored)32 min per module (64)
Break10 min
Math222 per module (44; 40 scored)35 min per module (70)
Total4982 h 14 min + break

Two questions in every module are unscored pretest questions, mixed in with the rest and impossible to spot. The SAT is adaptive by module: Module 1 of each section mixes easy, medium and hard questions, and how you do there decides whether Module 2 is easier or harder on average. Inside a module you can move back and forth and flag questions; once a module ends you cannot return to it.

3. SAT scores

Each section is scored from 200 to 800 in steps of 10; the total runs from 400 to 1600. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so never leave a question blank. Italian calls read the scores in different ways: some set a minimum per section (Politecnico di Torino, Bocconi, Cattolica), some a total (Luiss, Trento), and Politecnico di Milano converts the SAT to its own TOL scale. College Board sets no expiry date; each call states which test dates it accepts.

4. SAT Math: domains and typed-in answers

SAT Math content (40 scored questions)
DomainShareQuestions
Algebra≈35%13–15
Advanced Math≈35%13–15
Problem-Solving and Data Analysis≈15%5–7
Geometry and Trigonometry≈15%5–7

About 75% of Math questions are multiple choice with four options; the other 25% are student-produced responses: no options, you type the number. The rules are strict, and SAT math practice should follow them:

  • up to 5 characters for a positive answer, 6 for a negative one (the minus sign counts);
  • fractions or decimals; a fraction that does not fit goes in as a decimal, truncated or rounded at the fourth digit — 2/3 as .6666 or .6667, but not 0.67;
  • a mixed number as 7/2 or 3.5 — "3 1/2" scores nothing;
  • no %, comma or $ signs;
  • if more than one answer is correct, enter just one.

A calculator is allowed on every Math question: the Desmos graphing calculator built into Bluebook, or your own approved handheld. A reference sheet of formulas is available throughout. About 30% of Math questions are set in a short real-world context.

5. Reading and Writing

Every Reading and Writing question is a short passage (25–150 words, sometimes a pair) with one four-option question. The four domains are Information and Ideas (≈26%), Craft and Structure (≈28%), Expression of Ideas (≈20%) and Standard English Conventions (≈26%). For students whose first language is Italian this is usually the section to train hardest: the passages are short, but the time per question is about 70 seconds.

From Italy the SAT costs $111: $68 registration plus a $43 international fee. Four score reports are free if you pick the universities within nine days of the test; later each costs $15, so choose your Italian universities before test day. There are SAT test centres in Italy, and some Italian calls (Bologna's, for example) state that a SAT taken at any centre in Italy or abroad is valid: find the current list of centres with College Board's test centre search when you register. Before test day you must install Bluebook and complete the exam set-up on your device.

Universities not in the table — Padova and the Statale di Milano among them — did not mention the SAT in their admission pages when this guide was written. Each university needs its own score report sent by College Board, using the university's code from the call.

8. SAT, TOL, TIL, TOLC: which one?

There is no national equivalence between the SAT and the Italian tests: each university decides course by course. At Politecnico di Milano the SAT is one of the alternatives to the TOL; at Politecnico di Torino it is the only alternative to the TIL; at Bocconi it replaces the online admission test, converted by percentile. The SAT makes sense when you are applying to several universities that accept it, or abroad as well, because one score serves all of them. If you are applying to a single Italian course, its own test is usually the shorter route. The SAT is not a route into Medicine: Italian-taught courses go through the semestre filtro, English-taught ones through the IMAT.

9. SAT preparation: how to study

Study for the SAT on the format you will meet. Take College Board's full-length SAT practice tests in Bluebook, under the real timing, at least twice before the exam. Between them, train by domain: the Math share is predictable (Algebra and Advanced Math are 70% of it), and typed-in answers punish formatting mistakes, so practise entering fractions and negatives the way the rules require. Use Desmos in practice as you will on the day — it is fast for systems, intersections and quadratics, slow for arithmetic you can do in your head. For Reading and Writing, practise to the clock: about 70 seconds per question.

10. FAQ

Which Italian universities accept the SAT exam?

Politecnico di Torino (instead of the TIL), Politecnico di Milano (instead of the TOL), Bocconi (all bachelor programmes, including Law), Luiss, and some English-taught courses at Bologna, Torino, Sapienza, Cattolica, Trento and Ca' Foscari. Each sets its own minimum score and the test dates it accepts, in its call for applications.

What SAT score do I need for Italian universities?

It depends on the call: at least 650 in each section for Politecnico di Torino (2026/27), at least 1040 in total and 520 per section for Bocconi (2027/28), at least 1200 for Luiss (2027/28), at least 560 per section for Cattolica. Politecnico di Milano converts the SAT to its TOL scale and needs at least 30/100.

How long is the SAT test?

2 hours 14 minutes of testing plus a 10-minute break: Reading and Writing in two modules of 32 minutes, then Math in two modules of 35 minutes.

Is the SAT adaptive?

Yes, by module. Module 1 of each section mixes easy, medium and hard questions; how you do there decides whether Module 2 is easier or harder on average.

Can I use a calculator on the SAT?

Yes, on every Math question: the Desmos calculator built into the Bluebook app, or your own approved handheld calculator. A reference sheet of formulas is available throughout the Math section.

How do I enter a typed-in Math answer?

Up to 5 characters for a positive answer, 6 for a negative one. Fractions and decimals are both fine; a mixed number must go in as 7/2 or 3.5, never as 3 1/2. No %, comma or $ signs. If a fraction does not fit, enter its decimal, truncated or rounded at the fourth digit: 2/3 can be .6666 or .6667, but not 0.67.

When can I take the SAT in 2026–27?

The remaining SAT Weekend dates are 5 December 2026 (register by 20 November), 6 March, 1 May and 5 June 2027. College Board applies the same dates to students in the US and abroad.

Can I take the SAT in Italy?

Yes: there are SAT test centres in Italy, and some Italian calls (Bologna's, for example) state that a SAT taken at any centre in Italy or abroad is valid. Find the current list of centres with College Board's test centre search when you register.

How much does the SAT cost from Italy?

$111: the $68 registration fee plus the $43 international fee. Four score reports are free if you choose the universities within nine days of the test; after that each report costs $15.

Can I use the SAT for Medicine in Italy?

No. Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine taught in Italian go through the semestre filtro, and the English-taught courses through the IMAT. Neither accepts the SAT.
